Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is actually a relatively common condition the especially affects middle aged women.  We do not yet know the cause however this is a particularly debilitating conditions giving muscle and joint pain and stiffness all over the body.

Combined with the pain and stiffness a large number of patients also report extreme tiredness / exhaustion, electric like pins and needles in the arms and legs, inability to concentrate, dizziness, poor memory, irritable bowel habits and erratic sleeping patterns.  This is a complex and chronic illness that requires very a careful multi-disciplinary approach.

As part of a full management plan, gentle osteopathic treatment can help to relieve the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Gentle soft tissue massage can relieve tension within the muscles, whilst mobilisation of the joints can help relieve the stiffness associated with this chronic disorder.

If you suspect you are suffering from fibromyalgia firstly see your GP to have the diagnosis confirmed.  They can then discuss management with you in detail and possibly prescribe you with medication that can help relieve the symptoms.  You may also want to consider incorporating cardiovascular activity, such as light running, walking, cycling or swimming, to help reduce muscle tension and encourage natural endorphin production.  Finally you may want to consider some relaxation / meditative techniques as these have also been shown to be beneficial.

OUR APPROACH

A full clinical and orthopaedic examination helps identify any contributing factors. Fibromyalgia is a complex condition that requires a tool box of solutions. Once the examination is complete we will explain it to you in a way you can understand the treatment options available. We will also let you know whether we need to make any referrals.

Often, treatment can start immediately to help relieve your pain and usually includes a combination of soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, stretching, manipulation and acupuncture. However please be assured that you are able to choose if you would prefer not to have any particular treatment.

You will also be provided a wealth of advice including exercises and lifestyle advice. In addition, we can also do an ergonomic assessment to ensure your working environment does not contribute to your pain.
