Neck & Upper Back Pain

The lives we lead sat at desks and driving cars means many of us have suffered with neck and upper back at some point. Usually this is caused by tight muscles over the shoulders and up into the neck due to long hours spent in one position. These muscles never full contract or relax so end up fixed in a short tight position.

Due to this tightness, the really small joints in the neck and upper back do not move either, reducing fluid and oxygen circulation around the joints, making them feel stiff and sore. Then any unexpected movement which moves the neck further than it is used to, for example sleeping awkwardly, can cause a sprained joint resulting in more pain and inflammation! This can be very debilitating and distressing, often because you cannot move your neck at all.

We also help anyone suffering from trapped nerves in the neck, neck pain due to road traffic accidents, and from other accidents and falls.

Our Approach

A full clinical and orthopaedic examination helps identify not only the cause of your neck and upper back pain but also anything that may be contributing to it. Once the cause is established we will explain it to you in a way you can understand. We will also let you know how we can help and whether we need to make any referrals.

Often, depending on the cause, treatment can start immediately to help relieve your pain and usually includes a combination of soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, stretching, manipulation and acupuncture to help improve circulation and movement assisting recovery. However please be assured that you are able to choose if you would prefer not to have any particular treatment.

You will also be provided a wealth of advice including exercises and lifestyle advice. In addition, we can also do an ergonomic assessment to ensure your working environment does not contribute to your pain.
